About Us
Our Story
Welcome to Aethers Atelier — where a 2,000-year-old Chinese imperial craft meets contemporary design. We are a London-based studio specialising in two distinctive styles of handcrafted jewellery: the ancient art of Dian Cui (Tian Tsui, 点翠) feather inlay and the delicate beauty of artisan Lampwork Glass.
Dian Cui — A 2,000-Year-Old Imperial Art Form
Dian Cui (点翠), literally meaning "dotting with kingfisher feathers", is one of China's most extraordinary decorative arts. Originating in the Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago, this technique reached its peak during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, when master artisans created breathtaking phoenix crowns and ornate hairpins for empresses and members of the imperial court.
The craft involves meticulously cutting and hand-placing feather filaments onto gilt metal bases, creating a luminous, iridescent surface that shimmers like no gemstone can. Each piece requires anywhere from 6 hours to 3 days of painstaking handwork — a slow, meditative process that cannot be rushed.
Our Ethical Approach
Historically, Dian Cui used kingfisher feathers — a practice that contributed to the craft's near-extinction by the 1940s. At Aethers Atelier, we are part of the modern revival that honours the artistry while protecting biodiversity.
We exclusively use ethically sourced, naturally molted feathers:
- Peacock feathers — prized for their natural structural iridescence, each feather is carefully selected for the most intensely saturated sapphire-blue sections
- Parrot feathers — the rarest and most precious, with vivid natural colours that cannot be replicated
- Goose feathers — dyed using specialised techniques to create a rich spectrum of custom colours for larger, more elaborate designs
No birds are harmed in our process. Peacocks naturally shed their magnificent tail feathers every year after mating season — we simply collect nature's gifts.
The Alchemist's Glass
Alongside our feather art, we create stunning lampwork glass jewellery — each bead and pendant is individually shaped by hand over an open flame. These one-of-a-kind creations capture light and colour in ways that make every piece truly unique, from miniature vase pendants to iridescent bubble rings.
Our Artisans
Every piece in our collection is handcrafted by skilled artisans trained in traditional Chinese metalworking and feather-inlay techniques. Our workshop carries forward generations of knowledge — the same techniques once used to adorn the phoenix crowns of Chinese empresses now create modern jewellery designed for everyday elegance.
No two pieces are exactly alike. Each carries the subtle marks of the human hand that created it — a testament to the living craft behind every design.
