FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 'Dian Cui / Tian Tsui' Art?

Dian Cui (or Tian Tsui) was a legendary art form reserved for Qing Dynasty royalty, historically celebrated for transforming kingfisher feathers into 'living gems'.

Our Sustainable Approach

To honor this regal legacy while protecting biodiversity, our studio adopts a strictly ethical and cruelty-free approach. We exclusively use the finest naturally molted feathers—primarily sourced from Peacocks and Parrots. By hand-selecting only the most vibrant, naturally fallen feathers, we ensure our jewelry is as sustainable as it is beautiful, offering a guilt-free way to own a piece of historical splendor.

The Craftsmanship & Philosophy

Our design philosophy is a deliberate collision of Tradition and Modernity. We reimagine ancient filigree techniques within modern, geometric Art Deco structures.

This is a slow, meditative craft that cannot be rushed. Each piece is a labor of love, requiring anywhere from several hours to several days of meticulous hand-inlaying. Our artisans carefully place each delicate feather filament onto the metal base, creating a modern heirloom that breathes with both an ancient heart and a contemporary soul.

On the Curation of Feathers

A Guide to Our Feather-Gems: The Soul of Our Craft

At Aether's Atelier, the heart of our jewelry lies in the feathers themselves. We use three distinct types of feathers, each with its own unique character, challenges, and beauty. We believe in transparency and wish to share the story of our materials with you.

1. Parrot Feathers (The Rarest Jewel)

Source & Rarity: Sourced from naturally molted feathers of parrots, these are the most precious and costly of our materials. Their vibrant, saturated colors—fiery reds, sunny yellows, deep blues—are entirely natural, making each feather a rare gift from nature.

Craftsmanship: Parrot feathers are often delicate and have a very specific grain. Working with them requires the highest level of skill and the most time-consuming techniques to perfectly align their natural texture and color. This is reserved for our most exclusive, heirloom-quality creations.

Price Point: Highest, reflecting the extreme rarity of the material and the intensive labor required.

2. Peacock Feathers (The Sapphire Shimmer)

Source & Character: Ethically collected from naturally fallen plumes, the magic of a peacock feather lies in its structural color. Our craft is a meticulous process of isolating and harvesting only the most intensely saturated, sapphire-like blue sections of the feather.

Craftsmanship: The artisan's skill is in creating a seamless, uniform surface of pure, brilliant blue. The goal is to capture the feather's most precious quality: an iridescent shimmer that feels more alive and vibrant than any gemstone. This requires selecting dozens of feathers just to find enough perfectly matched color sections for a single piece.

Price Point: Mid-to-high range, reflecting the material's unique beauty, the highly selective harvesting process, and the skilled labor involved.

3. Goose Feathers (The Canvas for Color)

Source & Versatility: Sourced from domestic geese, these feathers offer a smooth, uniform texture. While they lack natural iridescence, their true strength lies in their versatility—they are the perfect "canvas".

Craftsmanship: We use a specialized, permanent dyeing process to imbue goose feathers with a rich spectrum of custom colors. This allows for greater design freedom and the creation of larger, more structurally complex, "heavy-work" pieces. The complexity is shifted to the overall design's assembly and gemstone setting.

Price Point: Most accessible, reflecting the lower cost of the base material and a slightly less intensive feather-handling process, allowing us to offer grand, elaborate designs at a friendlier price point.

Product Care & Durability

How do I care for my feather jewellery?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid contact with water, perfume, and chemicals. Handle gently — hold pieces by their metal components rather than touching the feather surface. When not worn, keep in the provided jewellery box. With proper care, Diancui pieces can retain their beauty for decades or even centuries.

Will the feather colours fade over time?

No. The iridescent colours in our peacock and parrot feather pieces come from structural colouration — the colour is produced by light refraction, not pigments. This means the colour is permanent and will not fade, even after many years. Museum pieces from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) still display vibrant colour today.

Can I wear feather jewellery in the rain?

We recommend removing feather jewellery before exposure to rain, swimming, or showering. While occasional light moisture will not damage the piece, prolonged water exposure can affect the adhesive and metal components over time.

Materials & Craftsmanship

What metals do you use?

Our metal bases are crafted from silver-plated copper or gilt copper, following traditional Chinese metalworking techniques. The bases are formed using filigree (fine wire work) and chasing before feathers are applied.

Are your pieces nickel-free?

Yes, all our jewellery is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. We use silver plating over copper for our metal components.

What is the difference between your glass jewellery and feather jewellery?

Our feather jewellery (The Celestial Collection) uses the ancient Diancui technique of hand-placing feather filaments onto metal bases. Our glass jewellery (The Alchemist's Glass) is handcrafted using lampwork techniques — each glass bead is individually shaped over an open flame. They are two entirely different craft traditions, each with its own unique beauty.
